In a Sea of Mediocrity

Two people die every day from an opioid overdose in my State.  These are people who were desperately trying to escape and finally succeeded.  It would seem they can not catch a glimpse of a brighter future for themselves.

We need to start a conversation surrounding our future. The future is something different then the present.  I believe we have to be intentional in creating something new now in order to make a better future.  Because our present seems to be something a lot of people seek to escape from. Somewhere we took a wrong turn.

Peter Thiel shares some riveting words in his book Zero to One.  "Unless we invest in the difficult task of creating new things, companies will fail in the future, no matter how big their profits remain today. What happens when we have gained everything to be had from the old lines of business we have inherited? Unlikely as it sounds, the answer threatens to be far worse than the crises of 2008, today's so called best practices lead to dead ends.  The best paths are new and untried. In a world of gigantic administrative bureaucracies both public and private searching for a new path might seem like hoping for a miracle.  Actually if business is going to succeed we are going to need 100's or even 1000's of miracles. This would be depressing but for one crucial fact - humans are distinguished from other species by their ability to work miracles." I have a conviction that we are connected to a Source where those miracles originate. Each one of us have access to that Source, always.

The question begs to be asked, are we creating a future that we are going to hate or love?

When we continue to live in a sea of mediocrity.  We end up in a future we are going to most likely hate.  But when we choose to seek to partner with our Source, perhaps it is our very soul within us, there is possibility for assistance.  Assistance in creating something new, something that will take us to a different place then the present, and give us an opportunity to create a beautiful future.  It would seem if we are living in a world where it seems evident that we are going to need 1000's of miracles to create a future we will love, we might should start determining best practices to tap into the miraculous.

Creating a Future ...

I have a favorite boutique grocery that is one of my favorite places to frequent. I love starting some days with a ice tea and scone from the boulengerie. One early morning I popped by the store, when it seemed the store was just wiping the sleep out of its aisles. It seemed I was the only one in the store this early.

I was greeted by the usual sweet ladies, who serve up these calories with absolute delight. These employees seem to be in the latter years of their career and are always friendly with the regulars.

I had made my purchase and had moved over to the condiments station by the exit. Suddenly I heard these same two employees, behind the pastry counter, getting into quite the little spat. Things were exculating pretty quickly over the cupcake count in the self serve case. I stood frozen for a second - with multiple thoughts racing into my head.

These sweet ladies now arguing, had always put on a happy face to the customers, and it was very clear in that moment, they absolutely were not happy in this job. I wondered how does one come to the place in life to find it necessary to annihilate each other - over cupcakes. Their exchange of words make it clear - they HATE this job. Since these two gals have worked in this store for years, is it possible they are also creating a life they hate? That was a sobering thought.

How does one arrive at a place late in their career and realize - I am creating a future that I am going to hate? We all know people that seem to have arrived at this dreaded destination.

I envision a time line with a past marked with black dots marking milestones. All these dots representing strategic decisions that we make through out our lives. Decisions that may seem innocent or even irresponsible at the time, but never connecting the dots to a future that we will hate.

Choosing to spend more than our income, choosing to eat more calories then we can possibly burn, choosing to keep showing up for the job we hate, choosing to ignore our child's terror like behavior, choosing to pretend that our relationships are good enough. All these little dots in life that we pretend will resolve themselves - add up. They are like stones that pave the way to a future we are simply going to hate.

It doesn't have to end this way. God only know the potential we can tap into if we determine that we wanted to be intentional in creating a future we love.

Excerpt from The Intelligence of the Cosmos: Why Are We Here? New Answers from the Frontiers of Science by Ervin Laszlo

I love two things about this text:  First, the vibrations are In-Formed. Second, a man who devoted his whole life to the most clear-headed science.  What a great setup to a beautiful thought.

The old concept, based on Newton’s classical mechanics, has run its course. There is a new concept of what the world truly is . It is not an ensemble of separate bits of matter moving in accordance with mechanistic laws, but an intrinsically whole system where all things are connected in ways that transcend the previously known bounds of space and time. In the new concept, the things that furnish the world are not pieces of matter. Surprisingly (or perhaps not so surprisingly, because this has been an age - old intuition) they are basically vibration. The vibrations that make up the world we observe are not random but highly ordered: they are coherent  Their order and coherence tell us that they are not the result of mere chance. To use a term suggested by physicist David Bohm , the vibrations are “ in-formed . ”

The great physicist Max Planck said it clearly. In one of his last lectures in Florence he noted , “ As a man who has devoted his whole life to the most clear - headed science, to the study of matter, I can tell you as a result of my research about atoms this much: There is no matter as such. All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particle of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together.” And, Planck added, behind the force that holds the vibrations of the atomic nucleus together “we must assume the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind.” * That intelligence, he said, is the matrix of all matter.

You Are Most Powerful When ...

  • You see the world as a friendly place where good things can happen. You are not naive, but when you think of all the possible outcomes, your mind naturally goes to the best of all possibilities.
  • You are excited to discover new things, to experience new things, and you know this will happen only if you take the first step.  You have a strong bias for action.
  • You don't neglect the need to learn and gather information--you are an explorer at heart, you like learning new things. It's more that you believe that action is the very best way to learn. What is around the next corner? The only way to know for sure is to walk around the next corner.
  • Ambiguity? Uncertainty? Risk? None of these bothers you too much. You are comfortable with gaps in your knowledge, with an incomplete set of facts, because, with your optimistic mindset, you tend to fill in the gaps with positives.
  • You love beginnings. At the start, as you imagine where events might take you, you feel the excitement ripple through you, sharp impulses, nudging, pushing, impelling you to act.
  • As you move off the beaten path you are fully aware that you will meet obstacles, but, for you, these obstacles are part of the fun, a sure sign that you are going where none have gone before you. In a strange way, obstacles actually invigorate you.
  • You move, move, move. Your life is about forward motion and momentum. You are therefore dismissive of anything that slows you down. Negative attitudes, complaining, inefficient rules or processes--you jettison all of these quickly and keep moving forward. On your journey you travel light.
  • For you, new is fun. New is unknown, and the unknown challenges the status quo and shows you different avenues forward. You read deeply within and around your subject so that you can be the first to encounter new techniques, trends and technologies.
  • You are clearly on a mission of discovery, others want to join you on it. Who knows what we might find, and who might benefit?
